Columbus Direct FAQ

How many people can I include in my policy?

Policies are available for up to 8 travellers online, larger group policies are available on application.

Am I covered if I go on a cruise?

Yes, however, it's important that you select a destination area that covers the international waters your ship may be travelling into. For instance, if your cruise takes you around the East Coast of Australia, the destination area of your policy will likely need to be 'South Pacific', even if the boat only docks in Australian ports. Your policy will then provide cover in case you need medical treatment or need to be repatriated from the ship while it is sailing in international waters. However there will be no medical cover while you're in Australia (ie ashore or at a port whereby Medicare services apply).

Am I covered for skiing and my equipment?

Yes if you purchase their snow sports activity option. This policy will cover for $25 million cover for overseas medical expenses plus ski equipment, ski pass cover, piste closure cover, avalanche delay cover and off piste skiing (inside resort boundaries with a qualified guide.)

Can I pay to reduce or cancel my excess?

No, Columbus Direct does not offer a buy-out option.

What additional extras are there?

Optional cover is available for winter sports and a wide range of other sports and adventure activities, plus certain work and volunteer activities. Pregnant travellers can apply for a cover extension to cover trips up to the 30th week of pregnancy and to include cover for childbirth and care of the newborn from week 26. (Terms and conditions apply.)

Am I covered if my tour company collapses?

No, Columbus Direct do not cover for default of an operator.

I’m not an Australian resident- can I buy cover?

You do not need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to buy this policy you are just required to have lived in Australia for the past three months.

What size moped or motorbike am I covered to ride overseas?

Columbus Direct will cover you on-road automatically for an engine size of 125cc or less provided you wear a helmet and meet the licencing criteria outlines in their PDS. Optional extra cover is available for driving vehicles over 125cc on-road.

Can I extend my policy from overseas?

Extensions are available in some cases, subject to underwriter approval. You will need to apply for the extension at least 5 days before your policy expires.

Do they cover for my rental vehicle excess?

Yes, they will cover up to $5,000 if you are required to pay for accidental damage, malicious damage, loss or theft of a vehicle you have rented from a licensed rental agency and whilst you are the driver.

Who underwrites them?

Columbus Direct policies are underwritten by certain syndicates at Lloyd's of London. Columbus Direct Travel Insurance Pty Limited (ABN 99 107 050 582) is an Australian Financial Services Licence holder: No. 246636.

What's their cooling off period?

19 days provided you haven’t claimed or travelled under the policy.

Where are they based?

Sydney!
