Medical advice for senior travellers

Are you young at heart and off to travel the world, but finding it difficult to get travel insurance for your pre-existing medical conditions?

Unfortunately there are some medical conditions that insurers just will not cover. But don’t worry, you can still have a great trip. Here’s some medical advice for senior travellers to ensure you have a problem-free holiday.

Have a check-up before you go

Remember that if you are admitted into hospital overseas and didn’t tell your travel insurer about a previous medical condition, you may for be covered for medical fees which can easily run into thousands of dollars. Be honest with your insurer and have a check-up before you go to make sure you provide them with up-to-date-medical records.

Have you got enough medicine for your trip?

Make sure you have enough medicine to cover you for your whole trip as buying medicine overseas could be expensive, and dangerous if you’re not sure what you’re buying! Make sure you also check with your doctor to see if you need to change any of your prescriptions due to different locations or time zones.

Take a doctor’s note with you when you travel

You’re going to need a medical declaration anyway to get travel insurance – so make sure you take this with you when you travel. Also remember that different countries have different regulations and medicine you take in your country make not be allowed where you are going. Take a medical note to make sure you don’t have any problems at customs.

Medical treatment overseas

If you’re going to a country that you don’t speak the local language in – be careful of any medication you might buy there. Be sure to check you are buying the correct medicine for your condition.

Get vaccinated

Before you embark on your adventure make sure you check what vaccinations you might need. Senior travellers might need a flu injection too.
