CTI Verdict

American Express travel insurance is a little different from most; it’s complimentary cover that comes with eligible Amex cards, automatically activated when you pay for your trip using your card. The level of cover varies depending on which card you hold, with premium cards like the Platinum offering significantly more than entry-level options. The travel insurance is a nice perk if you’re already an Amex cardholder, but the excluded activities list is quite long, and anyone 80 or over isn’t covered at all. It’s worth checking what your specific card actually includes before you travel.
