The United States has several major travel peaks: June to August for summer holidays, late November for Thanksgiving, and mid-December to early January for Christmas and New Year. Spring break in March and April creates additional demand in Florida, California and other warm-weather destinations. National parks are often busiest in summer, while ski resorts peak in winter. Shoulder seasons such as April to May and September to October can bring fewer crowds and pleasant weather in many regions, but school holidays, festivals and major sporting events can change local patterns.

The United States experiences different natural hazards by region and season. Atlantic and Gulf hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest activity usually from August to October; wildfires are most common during hot, dry periods, especially in the West. Tornadoes are most frequent in spring and early summer in parts of the central and southeastern states, while winter storms and extreme cold affect northern regions. Heatwaves can occur in summer across much of the country. Risk depends heavily on destination, so monitor local weather and emergency alerts throughout the year.

The US climate varies dramatically, from snowy winters in the north to tropical conditions in Florida and Hawaii and desert heat in the Southwest. June to August is peak summer, often hot and humid in the East and South, while spring and autumn are generally comfortable for many city and national-park trips. Hurricane risk affects Atlantic and Gulf coasts from June to November, especially late summer and early autumn. Winter brings snow and ice to northern states and mountain regions. Plan by region: there is no single best weather season for the entire country.

Where each factor comes from

Each factor is normalised to a 0-10 monthly score. Crowds, disaster risk and costs are inverted before they are combined, so a higher score is always better. The sliders set how much each factor contributes. This page scores New York.
