France is busiest during June to August, when European summer holidays bring high demand to Paris, the Riviera, Provence and coastal resorts. July and August are particularly busy, and many French residents take holidays in August. Spring, especially April and May, attracts visitors for city breaks and gardens, while December is popular for Christmas markets and festive trips. The shoulder months of September and October can offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds, although major events and fashion weeks affect Paris. January to March is generally quieter outside ski resorts and special events.
France's main seasonal natural hazards vary by region. Summer heatwaves and wildfires can affect southern France and Mediterranean areas from June to September, especially during hot, dry spells. Heavy autumn rain can cause flash flooding in the south, while winter storms may disrupt coastal areas and transport. The Alps and Pyrenees face snow, avalanches and severe mountain weather in winter and spring. Earthquakes are possible but are not a dominant seasonal risk for most tourist itineraries. Monitor local alerts during heatwaves, wildfire episodes and mountain travel, as conditions can change quickly.
France has varied climates, with oceanic conditions in the west, continental winters in the east, Mediterranean summers in the south and alpine weather in mountain regions. May to June and September are often comfortable for sightseeing, with milder temperatures than peak summer. July and August can be hot, particularly in southern cities and inland areas, with occasional heatwaves. Autumn and winter are wetter and cooler in many regions, while mountain destinations receive snow. The best timing depends on whether the trip focuses on Paris, beaches, wine regions or skiing.
