Most of us know the importance of purchasing travel insurance and the peace of mind it brings. So when it comes to travelling during pregnancy, it is important to ensure that you have the best travel insurance to suit your needs.
The good news is, several Australian travel insurance companies cover unexpected medical complications for women up until 26 weeks of pregnancy, with a few offering cover up to 30 weeks of pregnancy. Expectant mothers can still buy standard travel insurance after the maximum gestation limit; however they won't be covered for anything related to the pregnancy.
Like all insurances, there are some restrictions and cover exclusions that apply for pregnancy. So make sure you read the fine print. Some common examples include;
- you are travelling against doctor's advice;
- complications exist with the pregnancy;
- your trip extends beyond the maximum weeks of pregnancy permitted
- it is a multiple pregnancy;
- the pregnancy resulted from assisted reproductive programmes;
- excludes childbirth or the health care of a newborn child.
Some of these exclusions can be removed by paying an additional premium or completing a medical assessment form.
