Seniors Travel Insurance Age Limits

04 March, 2019 By Hayley Kennedy

If you’re over 60 finding reasonably priced seniors travel insurance can be tricky, however this doesn’t mean you should compromise on cover!

What Age Can I Buy Travel Insurance Until?

Age restrictions vary from insurer to insurer. You might also find limits on the levels of cover available to elderly travellers too.

Unfortunately finding this information can be quite time consuming as many insurers don't make their conditions or eligibility of cover very clear.

Well aren’t you the lucky ones, we’ve done all the hard work for you. Check out our table below which lets you compare the age restrictions from 20 Australian insurers all in one place. Yippee!

There are plenty of insurers that offer cover to the young at heart traveller with no age restrictions at all :)

General Advice Warning: The contents of this article were accurate at the time of writing. Insurers change their policies from time to time, so some information may have changed. You should always read the Product Disclosure Statement of your chosen insurer to understand what is covered and what isn't. The information provided is of a general nature only and does not take into account any personal objectives, financial situation or needs. Before making a decision you should consider the appropriateness of the information having regard to your personal circumstances.

Age Loadings

Irrespective of how active you are, many insurers add significant age loadings to policies and may limit the levels of cover that are available to elderly travellers. So even if you’re a young at heart traveller you might find your travel insurance is quoted based on age bands, rather than personal circumstances.

For example, for a 2 week trip to Europe a 50 year old can expect to pay $75 upwards for their comprehensive travel insurance policy, a 60 year old can expect to pay $85 upwards, a 70 year old can expect to pay $94 upwards and those over 80 years the cheapest comprehensive policy starts at $200.

Frequent Traveller?

Now you're retired you've got more time to travel. If you tend to go away more than twice a year you should definitely consider an annual-multi trip policy. Annual policies cover you for all trips you make in a 12 month period - internationally and domestically. In a lot of cases annual multi trip policies tend to have lower age limits than single trip policies. You should also remember to check the limits on the maximum trip length as these tend to vary anything from 15 days to 90 days per trip.
