Understand your family travel insurance policy

Like any type of insurance, family travel insurance has inclusions and exclusions you need to be aware of.

If you're planning that holiday of a lifetime, you'll need to make sure you've got the right policy to protect all your loved ones. If you don't understand the ins and outs of the fine print, you could find yourself without the vital cover you need.

Protect you and your family and make sure you understand your policy today!

What is a dependant?

Dependant’ means your children, grandchildren, step children, adopted children, and fostered children not in full time employment, under the age of 21 and travelling with you.

If your ‘depandants’ tick all these boxes, then they will be included in your family travel insurance policy for free. Hurrah!

What is a family?

You the policyholder, your spouse (or legally recognised de facto) and your dependents. One parent can take out one policy which can cover up to 25 dependants for free, but remember the same benefits will be shared irrelevant of how many people.

Family time

As a family, you are insured as a family, meaning that you must be together for your cover to be valid. If your kids decide to go off on a surfing camp for example, and then get injured they may not be covered as they were not under your care.

Not all activities are covered

If your kids are planning on go-carting or rock climbing be aware that these kinds of activities are not covered under a typical family insurance policy, so they won’t be covered if they injure theselves and end up in hospital costing you an arm and a leg!

Valuable item limits

Insurers have set limits on how much they will insure you for lost and stolen items. This limit applies per policy, rather than per person.  So if three people in your family lose their smartphones, you probably won't have enough cover to reimburse the total value of all items. Make sure you have adequate cover by increasing your single items limits.
