Whether it’s your passport, your camera or your whole bag, there’s not much worse than having things go missing when you’re on holiday. Every traveller takes a risk when they carry their luggage around the world with them, and unfortunately this risk can sometimes ruin a holiday completely. Imagine getting to the airport just in time for a flight and realising that your passport is nowhere to be seen, or arriving home without a single photo because you had your camera stolen and couldn’t afford to replace it. When it comes to travelling, travel insurance for luggage and personal belongings is crucial.

Thousands of travellers have come home with the same sad tales of pickpockets, missing cameras, stolen money and slit bags. No matter what your destination there are always people who will realise that as a tourist your small daypack or handbag is probably carrying some pretty expensive items. Ninety percent of the time you won’t feel a thing as your wallet is sneakily taken from your pocket, or your backpack is unzipped, and it’s often too late to do anything about when you realise. Unfortunately travel insurance won’t replace the photos you may lose, but if you have sufficient cover for your luggage then it will at least ensure that you are reimbursed for any money lost and that any expensive goods are replaced. Also if you are unfortunate enough to have your passport stolen, a comprehensive travel insurance policy will cover you for alternative transport and accommodation if you are unable to meet your pre-arranged travel arrangements.

Every travel insurance policy will have some level of cover for luggage and personal effects. It is important to compare policies before you purchase one, however, to make sure that the level of cover will be sufficient for you and your particular trip. Simply buying the cheapest policy available may mean that while you are saving money you are making sacrifices in other areas, and when it comes down to stolen luggage you don’t want to find out that you won’t be covered. Make sure that the level of cover is not only enough for your belongings, but if you are travelling with two of you on the one policy, or if it is a family policy, that the insurance will sufficiently cover every traveller’s belongings.

When it comes to expensive items like cameras, video cameras or laptops you certainly don’t want to take any risks. These items, along with the equipment that goes with them can be very expensive, and can sometimes be higher than the total limit of cover for your luggage. If you can’t find any further information about this on your insurer’s website then just give the call centre a ring. You will often be able to pay a little bit more to have these expensive items covered.
