Travelling with your family is fantastic, but it’s no secret that the risk of extra costs increases, particularly in the areas of medical and hospital costs. Before embarking on your big overseas family holiday, make sure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy that will cover the whole gang.
Insurance checklist:
1. Be sure to purchase travel insurance with unlimited medical and hospital cover. Particularly with a big family, you don't want to have to worry about medical costs mounting up if anyone gets sick. Not only this but if you are forced to stay in a particular spot then you will find yourself forking up costs for additional accommodation and travel expenses until you can get back on track.
2. Look for a policy with unlimited cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits. There's nothing worse than when someone falls sick days before you’re scheduled to leave, and the whole family has to cancel the trip. At least if you have this covered you know that you can claim back all the cancellation costs and book your holiday again.
3. Make sure your travel insurance provides enough cover for your luggage, not only for the costs of replacing stolen or broken luggage but in case your bags are misdirected and end up briefly travelling the world, leaving you with nothing but the clothes on your back.
4. Look for an insurance cover that not only suits your family but also suits your particular trip. For example, if you plan on hiring a car overseas then having cover for the rental vehicle excess will definitely put your mind at ease, as well as save you money spent on excess waivers with the rental vehicle company. If you plan on doing any adventure activities then travel insurance is a must, but always double check with the insurer as to exactly what is covered.
5. Last but not least make sure you do plenty of research and compare not only prices and policy levels but check for special family deals. Spending a bit of extra time on this can save you a significant amount of money on your travel insurance as you will be able to find policies that will cover your kids for a very low cost, in some cases even for free!
